The walls of his father's office seemed entirely too close. Suffocating. Mohinder passed a hand tiredly over his eyes, leaning back in his seat and surveying the wealth of papers and files stacked atop the wide desk. They would take hours to sort through. Hours he'd been assured he'd have by concerned colleagues. Hours that could've been spent weeks before, speaking with his father. About everything, anything. His theories, his research. Time they could've passed in New York, meeting these people as colleagues. As father and son.

His own selfishness had prevented that, and now here he sat, guilt gnawing at his heart with nothing left of his father but this office and ashes on the sands of Kanyakumari.

Home had never been so close, and yet so far away.

Moving a stack of files to the floor, he tried to clear some room with which to make piles, when he heard the distant bleep of his cell phone. Praying it wasn't his mother, nor Mira trying to spur him towards the job offer she'd made him, he dug it out of his satchel, flipping it open and raising it to his ear.
